The Beer Safari
#100
Name: Goose Island 312 Urban Wheat Ale
Brewery: Goose Island Beer Company (AB-InBev)
Origin: Chicago, Illinois USA
Style: Wheat Ale
Alcohol Content: 4.2%
A little more than 6 months ago I initiated this Beer Safari to catalog my journey through the tasting of 100 different beers. Well, today, ladies and gentlemen, is the 100th beer: Goose Island 312’s Urban Wheat Ale. It’s been a long journey, but it’s not over yet. Will you all see me through to my next goal of 500 beers? Well, let’s see what happens (as it is, I’m a little doubtful that 500 different beers are available in South Korea, but I’ll see what I can do).
As for the Urban Wheat Ale…it was pretty good. Can’t say more than that, unfortunately. As a beer that President Obama thinks highly of, I certainly expected more, but I find it to be a pretty typical wheat beer. Regardless, props to my good friend, Paul Krueger, for introducing this one to me.

Name: Lagunitas India Pale Ale
Brewery: Lagunitas Brewing Company
Origin: Petaluma, California USA
Style: India Pale Ale (IPA)
Alcohol Content: 6.2%
Here is the 99th beer of the Beer Safari: Lagunitas IPA. I’m a big fan of IPAs, I’ll say that for sure. I think I love them because of the consistency from one to the next — you can always count on having that bitter punch to the tastebuds, no matter what the brand. To date, I haven’t found one that I didn’t like.

Name: Blue Moon Belgian Style Pale Ale
Brewery: Coors Brewing Company (MillerCoors)
Origin: Golden, Colorado USA
Style: Belgian ale
Alcohol Content: 5.4%
Interestingly, Blue Moon’s pale ale is the darkest of all of their beers that I’ve had so far. It’s been a while since I drank it, so I don’t remember anything specific about the flavor, but I don’t think it particularly wowed me, though I’m sure it’s much better than lite beer.

Name: Blue Moon Belgian White
Brewery: Coors Brewing Company (MillerCoors)
Origin: Golden, Colorado USA
Style: Belgian white (witbier)
Alcohol Content: 5.4%
Cost: i forgot
A shout out to my buddy Paul in New York City, with whom I drank this beer, the previous beer, and the forthcoming beer. Rooftop beer sessions rock!
This variety of Blue Moon shares my assessment with the previous: for something brewed by Coors, it’s fantastic. However, on the grand scale of craft brews, it’s just average. Still not a bad choice; don’t forget the orange slice!

Name: Blue Moon Summer Honey Wheat
Brewery: Coors Brewing Company (MillerCoors)
Origin: Golden, Colorado USA
Style: Wheat Ale
Alcohol Content: 5.2%
Cost: i forgot
The biggest surprise I had when checking up on this beer as finding out that Blue Moon was, in fact, a product of Coors. Who knew that they actually made some decent beer?
That being said, I have to say that, after all of the other beers that I’ve had over the past year, coming back to a beer that I used to consider one of the better choices, I was kind of disappointed. For a person who drank almost exclusively malt liquor, Blue Moon is indeed fantastic. However, on a scale of craft beer beer, it comes out as merely average.

Name: Smuttynose Summer Weizen Ale
Brewery: Smuttynose Brewing Company
Origin: Portsmouth, New Hampshire USA
Style: Wheat Ale
Alcohol Content: 5.2%
Cost: i forgot
Smuttynose Summer Weizen, an American style wheat-beer. Personally, I much prefer the German varieties to the American ones, personal preference. This beer wasn’t really bad, though among the beers I’ve drank I’d rate it somewhere in the middle.
